TECHNICAL DIRECTOR

Upstate Scenic Inc. has an immediate opening for a full-time, year-round Technical Director to work in a fast-paced commercial scene shop. Successful candidates will possess strong scenic carpentry and metal fabrication skills, a thorough understanding of theatrical construction methods, excellent organizational and project management abilities, and the technical expertise necessary to oversee projects from design through fabrication and installation. Candidates should be adaptable, detail-oriented, and able to collaborate professionally with designers, clients, and production staff.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Produce technical drawings from scenic designer renderings and construction documents
Develop construction plans and oversee project workflow from concept through completion
Maintain project schedules and production timelines
Coordinate delivery logistics and transportation of scenic elements
Plan and oversee load-in and load-out schedules
Prepare files for CNC machining and digital fabrication
Coordinate and participate in offsite installations, including rigging, scenery, and practical electrics
Maintain a safe and organized work environment
Ensure all work meets company quality standards and client expectations
Operate and oversee CNC machinery, including programming and routine maintenance
Perform scenic carpentry, steel and aluminum fabrication, rigging, and scenic electrical installation as required
Assist other departments and perform additional duties as needed

QUALIFICATIONS

Thorough knowledge of theatrical construction methods and technical production practices
Proficiency with Vectorworks or AutoCAD, VCarve, ProNest LT, and the USITT Scenic Design & Technical Production Graphic Standards
Experience with CNC programming, operation, and machine maintenance
Strong scenic carpentry and metal fabrication skills
Experience with welding, rigging, scenic electrics, and standard theatrical construction methods
Knowledge of woodworking and metal fabrication machinery and power tools
Forklift operation experience preferred
Strong organizational, problem-solving, and project management skills
Ability to communicate effectively with excellent interpersonal skills
Ability to work independently while collaborating within a team environment
Majority of the workday is spent indoors, with occasional offsite installations
Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license with reliable transportation
Must be able to perform repeated bending, squatting, lifting, climbing, and prolonged standing
Must be able to lift up to 75 pounds
Must be comfortable working on ladders and scaffolding
Willingness to work overtime, weekends, and occasional overnight travel as project schedules require

WORK SCHEDULE

Monday through Friday, 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.
Occasional overnight travel and weekend availability required.

COMPENSATION

Negotiable based on experience.
Full-time – year-round
Hourly pay with time and a half after 40 hours worked in a single week.

Scenic Carpenter

Upstate Scenic Inc. has an immediate opening for a full-time, year-round Scenic Carpenter to work in a fast-paced commercial scene shop. Successful candidates will possess strong finish carpentry and scenic framing skills, a solid understanding of workflow, a dedicated work ethic, adaptability, and the ability to interact professionally with fellow crew members while working collaboratively as part of a team.

Responsibilities

● Perform a variety of woodworking duties, including rough carpentry and finish carpentry
● Fabricate stage scenery, platforms, stair units, and other scenic elements
● Read and execute CAD drawings accurately
● Maintain a safe and clean working environment daily
● Assist with offsite installations and scenic load-ins/load-outs as required
● Operate a variety of woodworking equipment and power tools, including chop saws, table saws, screw guns, drills, sanders, and related machinery
● Work across departments and perform other duties as assigned to support production needs
● Ensure all work is completed to company standards and in alignment with project specifications

Qualifications

● Strong knowledge of scenic construction methods and technical theater practices
● Experience with finish carpentry, scenic framing, and general woodworking techniques
● Ability to read and interpret CAD drawings
● Knowledge of carpentry methods, measurements, and mathematics necessary for fabrication
● Experience using standard woodworking machinery and power tools
● The majority of the workday is spent indoors, with occasional offsite installations
● Ability to communicate effectively in English with strong interpersonal skills
● Work independently while contributing effectively within a team environment
● Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license with reliable transportation
● Must be able to perform repeated bending, squatting, stooping, pushing, and pulling
● Must be able to stand and walk for prolonged periods
● Must be able to lift, move, and transport materials weighing up to 75 pounds
● Must be able to ascend and descend ladders and scaffolding safely
● Willingness to work overtime as needed

SCENIC ARTIST

Upstate Scenic Inc. has an immediate opening for a full-time, year-round Scenic Artist to work in a fast-paced commercial scene shop. Successful candidates will possess strong scenic painting skills, an eye for detail, the ability to interpret designer renderings and elevations, a dedicated work ethic, adaptability, and the ability to work collaboratively with the production team to bring scenic designs to life.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Execute a wide range of scenic paint treatments including faux finishes, aging, distressing, wood grain, stone, metal, and other specialty finishes
Help create samples for scenic designers and project teams
Prepare surfaces for paint treatments; priming, carving, texturing, and other surface preparation techniques
Complete touch-ups and revisions throughout the fabrication and installation process
Maintain paint shop organization, safety standards, and proper care of tools and equipment
Assist with offsite paint touch-up work as required
Perform other duties as assigned to support production needs

QUALIFICATIONS

Ability to interpret paint elevations, color renderings, and scenic drawings
Ability to follow written and verbal instructions while working independently and collaboratively
knowledge of scenic painting techniques and theatrical paint treatments
Strong artistic skills with excellent attention to detail and color matching
Preferred minimum of one year of professional or college-level scenic paint shop experience
Ability to communicate effectively in English with strong interpersonal skills
Excellent organizational, time management, and problem-solving abilities
Comfortable working in a fast-paced environment with changing priorities
Majority of the workday spent indoors, with occasional offsite work at installation venues
Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license with reliable transportation
Must be comfortable working on ladders and scaffolding
Must be able to stand for prolonged periods and lift up to 50 pounds
Willingness to work overtime as needed
